Mastery Matters

Go Beyond Tutoring

Reading is the primary skill students need to succeed. Without good reading skills, they will struggle in all subjects and in many areas of life. Reading is our primary focus and we believe we offer the best reading program available, taking the average student from wherever their current level of reading is, to reading at their spoken vocabulary level with only 30 - 60 hours of instruction. Often this means that students jump two or more grade levels in reading ability. Our reading course is offered in our Prince George Learning Center or around the world via the Internet.

We know that because students struggle in reading, they may drop behind in other subjects. Even students who read well may struggle in other subjects for a variety of reasons. Because of this, we are expanding the subjects we offer. We are now inspiring learning in Elementary English, Elementary Math, Cursive Writing and Algebra I.

It is important to realize that, like our Reading Program, these are not tutoring sessions. Parents who are simply looking for help to get their child past the next test or grade level will be better advised to find one of the qualified tutors in Prince George. At Academic Associates, we offer a complete program. It starts at Point A, moves to Point B, then to Point C until finished. It may or may not move fast enough to help your child with the next test, but it will give him/her a solid foundation on which to understand the subject he/she is studying.

We charge $60.00 an hour which includes all workbook material; however, it may not include shipping charges for students living outside of Canada. Like the Reading department, there are no contracts.

Elementary Level English

The Elementary English program begins with a diagnostic assessment in our Prince George Learning Centre. This assessment will show any gaps in your child's learning so far. If a child misses or misunderstands a principle early on in school, it will be much harder for them in later years understanding instructions which assume they know the previous lessons. The diagnostic assessments helps to solve this problem by uncovering any such gaps.

After the diagnostic assessment has been completed a series of workbooks will be prescribed to cover any gaps and take the student as far as the parent desires. Each workbook may take several hours to complete depending on the student's ability. Workbooks are completed "in class" and any concepts the student does not understand are discussed immediately. Student knowledge is tested through a series of checkups, a self test, and a final test for each workbook. A student does not continue onto the next workbook until all the material in their current workbook is successfully understood and completed.

Elementary Level Math

The process for Elementary Level Math is the same as that for Elementary Level English.

Algebra I

Algebra I does not require a diagnostic test. It is a complete program consisting of 12 workbooks and may also include video instruction for students in Prince George, BC. Click here to read a course description.

Our aim in all these courses is not to teach, but to inspire learning and to assist the student in comprehending the material for themselves.

Cursive Writing

While some schools are dropping cursive writing, we feel it is an important skill. Although cursive writing is not used as often today as it has been in times past, it does help to develop fine motor skills as well as speed in communication. Cursive writing usually begins in the third grade after a student has mastered printing all the letters. In Europe the order is often reversed. This program simply teaches the student the cursive writing letters and how to write simple sentences and paragraphs in cursive.

Important Notes:

1. Like our reading program, these courses should not be viewed as tutoring but as complete programs.

2. Except for Cursive Writing, these courses are offered over the Internet as well as in our Prince George Learning Centre.

3. Although these are programs, there are no contracts and a student may withdraw without penalty at anytime with proper notice. Algebra I has a specific beginning and ending point. Elementary English and Math are "open-ended" and may be stopped whenever the parent feels their child has advanced enough.

4. With these courses we do not do "grade level" testing. We can tell the parent at what grade level we consider the workbooks their child is working on to be. This may or may not coordinate with the public school system.

5. The workbooks we use are produced by a Christian company and use Christian stories, examples, etc. to present the teaching material. If this is an issue for you, then these are not the programs for you.

I...wanted to let you know that [my daughter] got a wonderful report card and some great feedback regarding her reading and has been saying that she wanted to get back to Prince George so she could go back to her tutor. Coming from an eight year-old on the verge of summer holidays [that] is a big compliment...

I am happy to say that I have completed the Academic Associates Reading Program.  This program gave me the tools to enhance my reading skills. Most of all this program has taken down the walls that has hindered me from advancing in life.  I am very grateful...Diane is an awesome instructor...She makes this program fun and I have looked forward to our sessions.

Academic Associate Program Stories

"I'm in sixth-grade. I used to be the worst reader in my class. Not long after I started to go to Academic Associates I found that I could read whatever I could get my hands on. After just a few weeks I caught up to the rest of the class. Now I am the best reader in the class. I was also the worst speller in my class. Now I am one of the best. If they can do that for me, they can do it for you."-Josh

Thirteen year-old Kevin always had trouble with reading. He felt embarrassed when others read better than he did. But listen to him now. "When I first came to your clinic, I thought it would be the same as all the others I had tried. But it helped me more than all the others. I can understand what I read, and it helped me with spelling, too. Thank you!! Forever!! -Sincerely, Kevin" After only 46 hours at Academic Associates, Kevin is reading above grade level for the first time in his life.

"My name is Tania. I'm 15 years old. Reading was always very hard for me. I felt inadequate because all my friends read very well. I used to get discouraged trying to do my homework. After taking the Academic Associates course I can read with the best of them. My grades improved and so did my confidence. If you have a reading problem you should take this course." Tania is very bright. Her reading level rose from 3rd to 10th grade level within two months.

"Cassie struggled with reading, but in just the second lesson at Academic Associates, she loved doing it and didn't want any help. She raced through each line. She only mispronounced about one word in every fifty. For a six year-old, that is fabulous! She shows such confidence and such an increase in speed I can hardly believe this is the same child as just one week ago."-Charlan Pennington, mother
